The Department of Renal Medicine focuses mainly on studying the mechanisms of progression of chronic nephropathies and on new prevention and intervention strategies for diabetic nephropathy, non-diabetic chronic nephropathies, chronic allograft dysfunction, and cardiovascular complications in diabetes, chronic renal disease, dialysis and transplantation, as well as thrombotic microangiopathies.

ObJECTIVES

  • Identify screening and intervention strategies to prevent the onset of nephropathy and of other chronic complications in subjects with diabetes and/or hypertension, as well as in the general population
  • Identify strategies for preventing or slowing the progression of chronic nephropathies and eventually achieving remission/regression of renal dysfunction
  • Identify novel treatments for primary glomerular diseases such as idiopathic membranous nephropathy, focal and segmental glomerulo sclerosis and minimal change disease
  • Optimise immuno suppressive protocols in kidney transplantation and to create new donor selection criteria in order to expand the pool of available organs

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES

  • Pilot studies in patho physiology and clinical pharmacology that are carried out at the Clinical Research Centre to test new pathogenetic hypotheses and new treatment approaches
  • National and international networks and multicentre trials to verify the efficacy of the treatments identified above
  • Meta-analyses and probabilistic models to test new risk factors and treatments in large samples of patients and to apply this information at the individual level

Many of these activities arise from close cooperation with the Department of Molecular Medicine, the Department of Bioengineering and the Papa Giovanni XIII Hospital in Bergamo. This cooperation makes it possible to plan the department’s research based on new information derived from basic research and problems that are of major clinical relevance and that emerge during routine clinical activities.

Results
  • Identification of a pharmacological therapy to delay or stop renal diseases progression, and today it’s widespread all over the word
  • Identification of a strategy to prevent the complications of diabetes with a combined therapy
  • Found a way to increase the number of available transplant organ by using those of older donors
