The Laboratory has as its main objective the production of recommendations for clinical practice. It methodologically supports the National Health Service and various national and international Medical-Scientific Societies or Associations in guidelines’ production, from the formulation of the clinical question to the publication of the recommendations.
This activity is carried out by adopting the GRADE method (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation): a transparent, analytical methodology shared by the main international bodies responsible for the production of guidelines (WHO, NICE, etc.).
The method allows to produce ex-novo recommendations or to adopt existing guidelines of high methodological standard.
With the Bianco / Gelli Law and after the establishment of the New National Guidelines System (SNLG) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the Laboratory contributed to the publication of more than 20 Guidelines on the SNLG, currently recognized by Ministry of Health as a national reference for clinical practice.
The Manager and some collaborators are members of the International GRADE Working Group based at MacMaster University, Hamilton, Canada; members of Cochrane Italia, based at the University of Modena.
The Laboratory staff consists in statisticians/methodologists, clinical epidemiologists, bibliometrists, psychologists, general practitioners and medical oncologists.
The core activities of the Laboratory also include several projects of systematic review and meta-analysis of the medical-scientific literature, as well as methodological work on the main tools for evaluating scientific evidence.
Update and production of AIOM Guidelines
Since 2012, the Laboratory has been supporting the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM) in the production and drafting of 30 guidelines that cover not only organ but also transversal issues (neoplasms of the elderly), or inherent support therapies, increasingly used in the management of neoplastic patients. 22 Guidelines are already national reference and published on SNLG.
Production of Guidelines on Diagnosis and Treatment in Adults in the Autism Spectrum (Istituto Superiore di Sanità)
Since 2018, the Laboratory has been collaborating, as Evidence Review Team (ERT), with the National Institute of Health for the production of Guidelines on Diagnosis and Treatment in adults in the Autism Spectrum
Production of AISOD guidelines
Since 2018, it has been supporting the Italian Association of Dental Sedationists in the production of guidelines on the control of anxiety and phobias during odontostomatological treatments with the use of conscious sedation which represents the key to a safe and satisfactory clinical practice for patients. The Guideline is already a national reference and published on SNLG.
Production of SIAPEC Guidelines (Italian Society of Pathological Anatomy)
SIAPEC-IAP Guidelines for Melanocytic Tumors of the skin aim to formulate recommendations regarding: the sampling method and the histopathological diagnosis of melanocytic tumors of the skin, the reporting of ambiguous melanocytic lesions, the reporting of skin melanoma, the reporting of the sentinel lymph node and molecular investigations with clinical implications.
Production of Multisocietary Guidelines on Hepatocarcinoma (HCC)
Since 2021, it has been supporting Scientific Societies involved in the management of patients with HCC (AIOM, AIGO, AIRO, AISF, IT-IHPBA, SIC, SIGE, SIRM, SITO) which decided to produce an unique document that outlines the management guidelines with the intent to provide precise guidelines: i) on setting up cost-effective surveillance of patients at risk of developing HCC; ii) on a shared diagnostic and staging pathway of the tumor; iii) on the most appropriate treatment on an individual basis, in relation to the stage of the tumor and the psycho-physical-social status of the patient, in compliance with the principles of Precision Medicine.
Production of Guidelines on Oncoplastic Surgery
The Laboratory, in collaboration with the G.RE.T.A. Group for Reconstructive and Therapeutic Advancements, supports the production of international guidelines on surgical management of patients with breast cancer.
Production of AIMO guidelines
Since 2021, it has been supporting the Italian Association of Ophthalmologists in the production of guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of Uveal Melanoma.
International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
