The research of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology is aimed at the structural and functional study of specific and pharmacologically relevant gene products.

One of the principle goals is the identification of new proteins that could represent targets for drug therapy. Potential drug-protein interactions are studied also at the molecular level, using a wide variety of approaches ranging from studies performed on animal models to computational simulations.

ObJECTIVES

  • Development of efficient pharmacological strategies availing of pharmacological and functional studies (pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamic), drugs repositioning, peptides therapy, multiomics approaches and machine learning in the study of patient selection, as crucial element for personalized medicine improvment, nanoparticles in nanomedicine and nanodiagnostics, differentiating agents for personalized treatment of breast and stomach cancer, analysis of nuclear receptor as pharmacological target in oncology, analysis of molecular interactions
  • Identification of molecular targets of protein-mediated diseases (genetic diseases and diseases caused by aberrant structure proteins)
  • Identification of protein markers in biological fluids, cells, tissues and extracellular vesicles both in patients and animal models

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES

  • Use of in vivo experimental animal models (vertebrates and invertebrates) to study peripheral amyloidosis, neurodegenerative and tumor diseases
  • Use of in vitro experimental models (cell lines, biopsies and pluripotent stem cells) to study peripheral amyloidosis, neurodegenerative and tumor diseases
  • Protein synthesis and purification
  • Use of drug quantification methods in biological matrices
  • Use of methods of interaction between proteins and biomolecules
  • Use of gene sequencing methods and next computational analysis of results
  • Use of "System Biology" approach to collect, integrate and analyze heterogeneous and multi-parameter data
Results

Development of new drugs for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia
