Clinical Chemistry Laboratory

Thanks to its unique technical-analytical support activities, the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory is involved in almost all studies carried out in the Clinical Centre. It is involved in evaluating patients’ biochemical and haematological parameters, with a particular focus on patients with rare diseases, renal diseases, diabetes and on organ transplant recipients.

The laboratory has 30 years of experience in measuring renal function, using an independently developed and validated method, which determines glomerular filtration rate based on plasma clearance of iohexol. For several national and international multicentre studies, in which the measurement of glomerular filtration rate is required, the laboratory performs the centralised analysis and measurement of renal plasma flow, which is conducted in only a small number European centres.

Activities

• Analysis of routine biochemical and haematological parameters

• Quantification of some specific exploratory biomarkers, as defined by individual experimental protocols

• Services to support clinical trials, such as processing and sending samples to external laboratories, through collaboration with dedicated logistics operators

• Direct measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal plasma flow (RPF), using iohexol and p-aminoippuric acid (PAI), respectively, as exogenous markers, using high-performance liquid chromatography
